St. Augustine is without a doubt a very historic town with plenty to do.
If you live in Jacksonville, visiting St. Augustine at least once is a must.
And one time isn’t even enough to explore everything the city has to offer.
With all the fun there is to do here in North Florida, it can get pretty pricey; but lucky for you, we have concocted a thorough list of 25 cheap (or free) things to do in St. Augustine.

Fort Matanzas National Monument

Located at: 8635 A1A S, St. Augustine, FL 32080
Admission: FREE
Fort Matanzas National Monument – built by the Spanish in the 1740s. It was constructed to guard the Matanzas Inlet.
The fort was later considered a monument in the 1920s and is definitely a neat little stop while venturing through St. Augustine.
St. Augustine Distillery

Located at: 112 Riberia St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
The St. Augustine Distillery is definitely a must. There is a self-guided tour that includes a variety of spirits that you can try.
These tastings are free.
This experience also allows you to not only see how the spirits are crafted, but also gain more knowledge on the distilling process and most importantly – have a lot of fun.
Fort Mose Historic State Park

Located at: 15 Fort Mose Trail, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE (museum is $2.00 admission)
Fort Mose was originally established to be a “free black” settlement. In other words, a settlement made for people of color who were either formally enslaved or born into freedom.
Visiting Fort Mose, will allow you to both embrace nature and American/Spanish history.
St. Augustine Farmers Market at The Amp

Located at: 1370-1380 A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway, St. Augustine, FL 32080
Admission: FREE
The St. Augustine Farmers Market takes place on a weekly basis on Saturday at the St. Augustine Amphitheater.
It’s free to roam, network, and discover local businesses.
There is also live entertainment that you can sit down and enjoy.
Governor’s House Cultural Center and Museum

Located at: 48 King St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
The Governor’s House Cultural Center and Museum was established in 1598 as headquarters for administrative offices for the government at the time.
The Governor’s House is now a museum containing historic art and artifacts. It is also used as a wedding venue from time to time.
Kava lounges of St. Augustine

Admission: FREE (drink prices vary)
Games, relaxing environment, music, non-alcoholic drinks – how can it get better than this?
Kava lounges provide the perfect atmosphere for socializing, relaxing, and playing games.
Drinks are typically under $10 and are fairly priced.
If you’ve never tried or had kava before, it’s worth the experience as a whole.
If you feel like it may not be for you, still – give it a go. Life is about new experiences and there is no kinder and welcoming community than the kava community.

St. George Street

Located at: St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
St. George Street is considered the main street of St. Augustine to which holds the home to many local restaurants and businesses.
St. George Street is an unforgettable walk since it’s the street to the oldest city in the United States.
Make sure you pass by the Old City Gates on the north side of the street which were used as a line of defense for St. Augustine.
Castillo de San Marco

Located at: 11 S Castillo Dr, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE (Outdoor area only; admission for indoor is $15.00)
Castillo de San Marco, out of all things in St. Augustine, is possibly one of the attractions that stand out the most in the city.
Used as a masonry fort, the Castillo de San Marco was finished building in 1695.
Although indoor has a $15.00 admission fee, the outdoor area is completely free and just as aesthetically pleasing as the inside.
Indoor area is free for active duty, veterans, and children 15 years old and under.
Mission Nombre de Dios & Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche

Located at: 101 San Marco Ave, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
Take a visit to the Mission Nombre de Dios & Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche.
This neat shrine is known as the oldest shrine in the United States which was built in 1609.
Observing the image above, you’ll notice its unique exterior with nothing be green grass. Simple, yet very pleasing to the eye.
This shrine has no admission charge and is definitely worth a visit.
San Sebastian Winery

Located at: 157 King St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
The San Sebastian Winery is the second largest winery in Florida and has opened in 1996.
Here, you’re allowed to try multiple different wines all while touring the winery and learning about their wine.
There’s a restaurant located inside if you’d like to grab some food and they regularly host live music events.
St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine

Located at: 41 St George St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
Being one of the very few houses in St. Augustine that predate the 1820’s, this place is something you would expect to see in Europe.
This shrine is dedicated to the firsts Greek people to come to America.
The art in the shrine is gorgeous and definitely deserves a visit.
Anastasia State Park

Located at: 300 Anastasia Park Rd. St. Augustine, FL 32080
Admission: FREE (without vehicle); $8 per vehicle
Anastasia State Park is home to 1,900 acres of beaches, marshes, sand dunes, and 139 campsites through out the park only a walk from the beach.
This park is great for camping because you can wake up, enjoy a pretty beach day and the pleasing site of the wild life.
Vilano Beach and Pier

Located at: 260 Vilano Rd, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
Take a stroll down the Vilano Beach Beach and Pier.
The pier is free admission and allows you to embrace the beauty of the Matanzas River.
Vilano beach is a dog-friendly beach as long as your pup is on a leash.
You’re also allowed to bring your car onto the beach. Make sure to be informed on the vehicle access due to seasonal limitations.

The Bridge of Lions

Located at: 2010 A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway, St. Augustine, FL 32080

The Bridge of Lions – a symbol of the country’s oldest city with the two lions guarding the it.
The Bridge of Lions connects from downtown St. Augustine to Anastasia Island and gives you a beautiful view of the river, and the Castillo de San Marco.
First Friday Art Walk from the St. Augustine Art Association

Located at: 22 Marine St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
St. Augustine Art Association Gallery installs brand new exhibits every month from student artist to professional artists.
Every first Friday of the month, SAAA hosts the Friday art walk where you can hop from multiple art galleries to the other.
You can also pick up shuttle passes at any participating art gallery to ride the Old Town Trolley for free.
They are all close to each other and Friday art walk is also free of charge.
Live Music

There are hundreds of events that take place within the Jacksonville Metropolitan Area.

South Ponte Vedra Beach Recreation Area

Located at: 2993 S Ponte Vedra Blvd, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082
Admission: FREE
South Ponte Vedra Beach Recreation Area is a neat little beach area.
It’s definitely one of the quieter beaches in North Florida.
There are barbecue grills if you’d like to bring your own steak – making it great for a family day or if you just want to do some grilling with friends.
Here you can find much bigger seashells than normal beaches, so if you like to collect shells, this is an excellent spot to do it!
Plaza de la Constitución

Located at: Plaza de la Constitución, St George St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
The Plaza de la Constitución is one of the oldest public areas in the United States.
Plaza de la Constitución was also used for the Public Market Place to sell meats and produce.
Take a stroll through history itself and relax in the gazebo – take a deep breath and embrace the history atmosphere.
Pena-Peck House

Located at: 143 St George St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
Pena-Peck was originally a home to British and Spanish officials.
There’s a bit of history to unravel in the home and a quick stop as you’re making your way down St. George street.
They also have a “Women’s Exchange” which is a program created for helping women with their economic stability.
Father Miguel O’Reilly House Museum

Located at: 32 Aviles St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
Father Miguel O’Reilly House Museum is another historic home within St. Augustine.
This museum has exhibits Catholic heritage of St. Augustine like instruments, statues, and artifacts.
Another museum free of charge for you and the family to enjoy!
St. Johns County Ocean Pier

Located at: 350 A1A Beach Blvd, St. Augustine, FL 32080
Admission: $2.00 per person, $6.00 fishing fee
St. Johns County Ocean Pier is a pier located a little further south and even with the $6.00 fishing fee, it’s still less than $8.00.
Located right next to the pier, you’ll have a two minute walk to Splash park – a free little water play area which is great for children.
Tolomato Cemeteries

Located at: 14 Cordova St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE (guided tours available third Saturday of every month)
Tolomato Cemeteries is a catholic cemetery for Native Americans that lived in the Tolomato village and also for former slaves that converted into Catholics.
A cemetery like this has a lot of history and is definitely worth a visit if you’d like to embrace that historic atmosphere.
Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine

Located at: 38 Cathedral Pl, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is the oldest Christian group in the United States.
This cathedral was built in the 1790’s after Spain recouped their colony.
This is yet another pretty church to visit.
Explore Flagler College

Located at: 74 King St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: FREE
Known as a liberal arts college and founded by Henry Flagler, Flagler College sits right by the heart of St. Augustine and is officially considered a National Historic Landmark.
This college has a gorgeous architectural design for both interior and exterior.
With a classical exterior and a dashing interior, Flagler College is definitely worth a stop on your trek through the city.
Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse

Located at: 20-30 St George St, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Admission: $6.95
The Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse in the United States is a $6.95 admission and gives you the opportunity to learn through an animatronic tour guide made by Sally Dark Rides.
This schoolhouse gives a good taste on what school was like at the time including teaching logistics, bathroom, and even student punishments for misbehavior.
